Star Citizen referral codes — what they actually do

Short version for people about to create their first RSI account.

What a referral code is

An RSI referral code is a string (like STAR-XXXX-XXXX) you enter when creating a new account (or that is pre-filled via an enlist URL). If you later become a “recruit” under RSI’s rules (often after buying a qualifying game package), the owner of that code may receive rewards on RSI’s ladder.

What it is not

Not a discount coupon for ships (unless RSI says otherwise for a specific promo)
Not something you can apply after your account already exists
Not a guarantee of any in-game rank or item for you
Not a way to “buy” referrals off-platform (that is against program spirit and often ToS)

When to use a code

Only when creating a brand-new RSI account. If a friend shared a code, use theirs. If you found this page and have no preference, an optional referral code is below.
